After millions of years of evolution, Life has an incredible amount to teach us about living well on Earth. Biomimicry (meaning imitating life) is about learning from nature, not about extracting from it, in order to emulate nature in our designs. It can be used to design new products, processes or systems. The design process can begin with biological inspiration and then proceed with design, or you begin with a design challenge, then explore biology for design solutions.
Our challenge was to reduce or stop plastic from entering the oceans and we looked to the Manta Ray to find out how it could filter particles. The increased and frightening amounts of plastic waste entering our oceans has become a tremendous issue for our planet. Not only are our oceans filled with garbage, but the organisms living inside of them are consuming what we are leaving behind. These plastics take years to breakdown, and when they do, they become microplastics; even the break down processes of these plastics release greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, causing observable negative effects to the environment.
